My training has a foundation of classical realism, technically derived from methods of the old masters such as Rembrandt.
I studied painting and art history in Florence Italy for one year during college.
This had a profound impact on my style of drawing and painting and overall love of art.

I love to draw from life as much as possible. Many of my sketches become the basis for my paintings.
When I create a painting, I usually work from dark to light.
I prefer oil paint for its luminosity and transparency when using a medium.
I rarely draw on the canvas before I start painting, rather I try to rough in generally the basic forms and shapes
with loose brush work, while still paying close attention to the original sketch.
This keeps the forms fresh and alive, while leaving the edges undefined and more true to real life.

I try to save using bold contrasts, colors or details for only the areas in a painting that really need them.
Sometimes I look at how a composition can be broken down into formulas, like recipes.
I also try to keep in mind something called The Golden Ratio, which is a design tool that has been used by artists throughout the ages.
It is a great way to help guide the viewer's eye throughout the composition.
